5 Reasons You Should Replace Your Plastics with Glass

Planet Pods - Why You Should Switch to Glass Packaging

Plastic is harming our environment, and companies are slow to evolve as their current business practices prove lucrative.

It’s not a question, it’s a fact. In November, a whale was found dead on the coast of Indonesia with more than 1,000 pieces of plastic in its stomach. In addition to this whale, birds and fish also fall victim to plastic flotsam. And yes, this means that you too consume plastic in food and water.

It’s no secret that we need to reduce our waste - especially in single-use plastics. The good news is, there are potential solutions to eliminate plastic completely. Though science and technology can't do it alone, the problem is so pervasive that the masses need to bind together and make mindful decisions in consumption to alleviate this issue. You can, and should, take the initiative to remove plastic in your day-to-day routine, and here are 5 reasons why you should replace your plastic containers with glass.

1. Plastic pollution either ends up in landfills or oceans, and can live for centuries

Most plastic packaging is discarded into landfills after a single use. If not in an landfill, those plastics end up in the ocean. Plastics are durable and therefore stay in the environment for hundreds of years after they are discarded, especially if they are shielded from direct sunlight in landfills. Glass, however, can be easily reused and is better than plastic in biodegradability score.

2. Glass is more easily recycled than plastic

Nearly every piece of plastic ever made still exists today, and it’s only getting worse. Many types of plastic are either dumped into landfills or aren’t able to be recycled, due to the toxic chemicals housed in plastic containers (a major problem with household cleaners). Glass containers are 100% recyclable, and about 80% of glass containers are made into new glass bottles. Only 9% of plastics are actually recycled, meaning the vast majority are dumped as waste in our environment.

3. Plastic yields a massive carbon footprint, where glass reduces carbon emissions

Furnaces can run at lower temperatures when recycled glass is used, because it is already melted down to the right consistency. Manufacturers also benefit from recycling in several ways—it reduces emissions and consumption of raw materials, which extends the life of plant equipment and saves energy.

4. Plastic poisons animals

Plastic is polluting our oceans and contaminating the aquatic food chain.  Fish and other marine life are ingesting plastic that contain polymer pollutants such as PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyl) and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloro), which can cause cancer and birth defects.

5. Glass is safer for food storage

Many people use plastic containers to store their leftover food. Unfortunately, plastic contains many harmful toxins, like di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), that can leach into our food and contaminate our tissue and bloodstream. If you’re the type of person who is constantly reheating leftover dinner, glass is a much better option for your health.

Straight up plastic is killing our planet, killing our aquatic life and KILLING US.

The most effective way to curb plastic pollution in the environment is by switching your habits to more sustainable resources. Planet Pods is an amazing and convenient way to modify your cleaning practices to achieve a true "clean" inside and outside of your home.
