Certain Scents Can Improve Mental Health
Scents are extremely powerful in that your olfactory senses trigger receptors in the amygdala, which is responsible for recalling memory. Memories are often positive and thus trigger positive emotions.
Aromatherapy is the process of using scents to treat mental distress using olfactory senses. We decided to incorporate aromatherapy into our cleaning product, Planet Pods, because we believe that the act of cleaning should encompass mental clearing as well. Lavender, specifically, has a fragrant compound present that lessens anxiety by stimulating olfactory senses to pass signals to the brain. Signal-sensing proteins called gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors in nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain are then relaxed.
Lavender, from the Lavandula angustifolia plant, has been used throughout recorded history by the Egyptians, the Romans, and later on in Ancient Greece. Stemming from the Latin word “lavare,” lavender literally means “to wash" so it should come as no surprise that many of its uses are as a scent added to baths, beds, clothes, hair and skin.
Lavender Benefits for the Mind and Body
The floral yet earthy fragrance of lavender has been shown both in research as well as through anecdotal evidence to promote wellness in mind and body through its ability to relieve stress and anxiety, promote a calm demeanor and elevate mood, as well as help promote a more restful night’s sleep.
Stress + Anxiety
One of Lavender’s main claims to fame is its ability to manage stress and alleviate anxiety. Acute and chronic stress can both lead to disease within the body and so finding ways to reduce stressful inputs is crucial to a healthy life. Inhaling the scent of lavender has a calming effect which makes it a potential alternative to traditional prescription medications. The soothing properties of lavender allow it to relieve feelings of nervousness and other symptoms of anxiety.
The active compounds in Lavender have sedative as well as mood stabilizing properties. Lavender, like many other plant medicines, interacts with our parasympathetic nervous system, allowing us to relax and create a sense of calm. The effects of Lavender on the brain are so powerful that you can continue to reap the benefits even after the scent has dissipated.
A good night’s sleep is important to so many of our body’s vital functions and yet many of us do not get enough hours of quality sleep per night. Breathing in the scent of lavender can help you relax both your body and mind so you can get to sleep. Lavender may help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and allow you to get more time in a state of deep sleep. Some have even reported that inhaling lavender before bed helped increase their daytime energy levels.
Reduced Chemicals in the Water System
Toxic chemicals, such as PCE (tetrachloride) and TCE (trichloroethylene), are often found in synthetic fragrances in order to create a more affordable cost. The problem with these chemicals, is that they get washed down the drain and circumvent septic filtration that then ends up in the drinking water supply. It's proven that concentrations of TCE are associated with neurobehavioral deficits, such as depression and anxiety. By removing these ingredients from products, we can curb the amount of PCE and TCE that ends up in drinking water.
Our Mental and Physical Health is Dependent on Environmental Health
Lavender is a natural scent that can help destress, elevate mood, boost energy levels, and deepen sleep. We believe in adding aromatherapeutic properties to cleaning products because the health of our environment directly impacts our mental and physical health.
